Tonight, the Hopewell High School Boys Volleyball will try and ‘Slay the Giant’.
Following their 1st Round WPIAL Playoff win over Derry on Tuesday, Hopewell will have the challenge of taking on No. 1 Shaler.
The Vikings defeated Shaler 3 sets to 1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-13 and 25-19).
An interesting fact here, in all the first round matches in 2A and 3A, Hopewell was the only lower seed to pull an upset (defeating the higher seed).
“It was a big win for us, we really played well,” Hopewell HC Rob Hall tells VSN. “You never know how they’ll react to a 2 hour bus ride and dealing with a big home court advantage for them but my boys came to play and got it done.”
“Derry is a well coached team and were undefeated section champs this year.”
Some standout performances on Tuesday were:
*Jake Pollick 18 Kills, 17 Digs, 4 Aces.
*Alex Alvarado 17 Kills, 11 Digs, 3 Blocks.
As difficult the match on Tuesday was tonight will be even more challenging as they’ll take on the No. 1 and team to beat Shaler.
“Shaler has been the favorite all year, ranked 1st in WPIAL and 3rd in PIAA,” said Hall. “They are a very good team, it won’t be easy but we will be up for the challenge.”
