Not a bad start for the Hopewell 10-year-old All-Star baseball team as they win the South Side Summer Slam Classic!!

Nice job boys and coaches.

Congratulations to the Hopewell coaching staff of: Jason Rose, Nick Holsinger, Josh Magnone and Aaron Cumpston.

Here is the roster of Hopewell’s 10-year-old roster:
Jack Holsinger
Bowen Smith
Breyson Hoth
Clay Magnone
Cody Goble
Declan Lavia
Eden Lingenfelter
Lincoln Cumpston
Logan Giering
Lucas Strano
Sean Bain
Tyler Berich
Waylon Phillips

The outcome of this game was never in doubt as Hopewell jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning courtesy RBIs from Lavia, Lingenfelter, Phillips and Goble.

With the way the Vikings pitchers performed one run was really all they needed as Smith and Lavia combined for a 3-hit shutout. Smith pitched the first three, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Lavia closed things out by dominating the last 3 innings, allowing only 1 hit and punching out 7 Fort Cherry batters.

While the Hopewell pitchers were outstanding, so were the defenders that played behind them.

Catcher Breyson Hoth threw out an attempted Fort Cherry base runner in the first. In the second, Hopewell’s defense registered two outs via fielder choice plays- one with Smith throwing over to Goble at 3rd base for one and then second baseman Lingenfelter flipping to SS Magnone for a force at second to end the inning.

Hopewell’s offense tacked on 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning thanks to an RBI single from Lavia, an RBI groundout from Giering, a sacrifice fly by Lingenfelter and an RBI single from Phillips. Hopewell led 8-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, Fort Cherry was threatening to get on the scoreboard as a runner advanced to 3rd with 0 outs, but Lavia went on to strike out the side.

In the top of the fifth, Fort Cherry recorded a single, but Lavia once again recorded all three outs via the strikeout.

In the last inning, the three outs were recorded on a pop up to Smith at first base, a ground ball to Phillips at 3rd base and fittingly, Lavia ended the game with a strikeout.

FINAL SCORE: HOPEWELL 8 FORT CHERRY 0

WINNING IS FUN, ESPECIALLY CHAMPIONSHIPS!!

Congrats to everyone on the team and good luck next weekend as you travel to compete in a tournament in East Liverpool.
