Hopewell Football 2025 Position Preview: Defensive Line

The official start of high school football is almost here as the Hopewell Vikings will start training camp on August 4th.

Coach Matt Mottes will start his second season as the Vikings head coach with a completely different vibe surrounding the team.

A year ago, Mottes took over as head coach late in the summer and it was a learning experience for everyone involved. For the players, they were learning a new coaching staff along with a new offensive and defensive system. For the coaches, they not only were learning about the players on the roster but at the same time trying to establish a new culture within the Hopewell Vikings football program.

Although you’d like it to, all of this doesn’t happen instantly as growing pains are involved.

All in all, progress was made in 2024 but much more will be expected this season. Last year, both the players and coaches hoped to make the playoffs, this year it’s going to be expected.

Vikings Sports Now is excited to be your home for Hopewell Vikings Football as no one will have the amount of coverage and insight as we’ll be able to provide.

As training camp quickly arrives, we wanted to provide you with an early look at the various positions on the team and the players that will be competing for playing time. All players will have the opportunity to earn time and move up and down the depth chart with what they show during camp.

First up, we take a look at Hopewell’s Defensive Line:

DEFENSIVE LINE:
“Our defensive line should be solid,” Coach Mottes tells Vikings Sports Now. “I feel like last year; our defensive line was our strongest point on defense. We have some returning starters, as well as some new additions which will allow us to have a good rotation of six guys which will keep players fresh, which in return will give the opposing teams a hard time.”

“Returning are Brian McCabe and Nick Thomas who are both all-conference honorable mention last year,” said Mottes. “They both did a really nice job last year and I’m excited to have both of them back.”

“We’ve added Aris Haniotes, who’s moved back to Hopewell. He was All-Conference last year for Quaker Valley. I’m excited to have him. He’s a great kid and works hard.”

“We also have guys returning like Mikey Black and Dom Gaughan. We also have some young kids like Jake Hall and Joey Barkovich, who played a little for us last year in a pinch when we needed some help. As a 9th grader, I think he did a pretty decent job and I’m looking to see them get on the field.”

The Vikings defensive line will be made better by another addition, Keith Young, a transfer from Keystone Oaks. Young is a junior and someone that will make the entire defense better and a player Hopewell fans will enjoy watching for the next couple of seasons.

“Keith Young was just ruled eligible by the WPIAL and he’s a tank. Honestly, he’s going to be a menace on the defensive line. He’s fast, he’s quick, he’s strong, he really understands football, he can read the opposing offenses and gets to the ball. He’s going to create a lot of problems for other teams.”

“One big positive from last year is that we gain a lot of experience. Like I said, I’m expecting a constant rotation of kids on the defensive line that are ready to play when we call their number. I expect them go in and ready to compete.”

Hopewell HC Matt Mottes Hopes Vikings Can Meet High Expectations

Back on June 14th of 2024, Matt Mottes saw his role with the Hopewell High School football team drastically change.

Originally, Mottes was hired by then head coach John Rosa to become Hopewell’s defensive coordinator. That changed later in the summer as Rosa was hired to become athletic director at Winchester Thurston High School.

Now, instead of just worrying about how to try the opposing offenses and coming up with a gameplan to do it, Mottes was now in charge of running the entire program.

Considering this was his first head coaching position and although he still received plenty of assistance and valuable advice from Rosa, Mottes was learning on the job.

All things considered, 2024 was a success as Hopewell came within a game of qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2012 and Mottes and his staff laid a solid foundation and a culture for future teams.

With the start of Hopewell’s season just 29 days away, Vikings Sports Now spent some time last night with Coach Mottes and asked him about a number of topics that we’ll be writing about in the upcoming days.

First thing we discussed was his situation entering year two as a coach and how he’s different, what he learned and the direction of the Hopewell Vikings football program.

“Last year, I was hoping that our team would be competitive,” said Mottes. “This year, I fully expect us to be competitive. We lost some games last year in the second half and two or three of those we could’ve, not saying we should’ve, but could have won. This year, when we get in a tight game, I’m going to expect us to win those types of games.”

Team aside, I followed up by asking how is Matt Mottes the head coach different today then he was a year ago?

“Obviously, I have to adapt to my players. I’ll pick up a little of their personality and hopefully they pick up a lot of mine. As far as how strict I am, I don’t know if I’ll change, I might be a little stricter and harder on them because we have a big bullseye on our back this year. People are expecting us to be good and to be honest, we haven’t really done anything to deserve that type of credit.”

“But I also know the kids better. I know which ones need a hug and I know which ones need a kick in the rear end. That’s something that is different than last year because this year I know the players I’ll need to put my arm around.”

Coaching football is nothing new to Mottes as he’s served as an assistant for plenty of years with different programs. Being a head coach and the man in charge was a change and a learning experience for Mottes.

“It’s important to surround yourself with good people, trust them, listen to them because they only have your best interest at heart. If it’s the boosters, your assistant coaches or the leaders on your football team, you have to trust them.”

2024 was also different for Mottes because it didn’t end with a team that he was part of winning. Being a former Aliquippa player and as an assistant with various other programs, winning has always followed and it’s in his DNA. After laying the groundwork last season, Mottes is looking forward to what’s in the future for Hopewell Vikings football, not only this year but in the years to come.

“Believe it or not, I liked to fly under the radar, I like to shock people,” said Mottes. “I’ve had different conversations with different coaches and all I hear about is how good we should be. That’s great and I’m glad everyone else has that expectation for us. Hopefully we meet our goals, and we can play up to our expectations and what everyone’s expectation are for us and the ones we’ve set for ourselves.”

The Hopewell Vikings will open the 2025 season on the road when they travel to Riverside (August 22nd), which will be followed by the home opener on August 29th against New Castle.

Hopewell Newcomers Keith Young and George Tafkov Ruled Eligible by the WPIAL

It’s been a very busy week at the WPIAL offices in Green Tree,

The WPIAL board started eligibility hearings on Monday for athletes that made the decision to transfer in the offseason.

This is always a controversial subject as the WPIAL board makes the decision on these players eligibility for the upcoming season and determine whether the move was done for athletic intent.

The subject of what’s wrong if a family makes the decision to move their family for athletic intent to better their kid’s situation is a whole different topic that I might address in the future.

Now back to the eligibility story as the Hopewell Vikings received some very good news.

The WPIAL has ruled that junior defensive tackle and offensive lineman Keith Young and junior linebacker George Tafkov are both eligible for the 2025 regular season. For now, those two players have been ruled ineligible for the postseason, if Hopewell were to make it. This is a decision that Hopewell will appeal.

Two important factors that worked towards their eligibility were that Young’s father has held permanent residency in Hopewell for two years. Also, Tafkov’s family started construction on a house in Hopewell Township years ago.

Hopewell athletic director Joe Lamenza played a huge role in the gathering of evidence, while Hopewell HS principal did an outstanding job presenting the athletes case to the WPIAL.

Both Young and Tafkov transferred to Hopewell from Keystone Oaks High School. Young is 6’3”, 285-pounds and from early looks, has a chance to be a dominant lineman on both sides of the ball.

Things have to be played out in camp and a position needs to be earned, but Tafkov could be a starting linebacker for Hopewell this season.

While Young and Tafkov received good news, other WPIAL athletes weren’t so fortunate.

Talented Seton LaSalle sophomore quarterback Anthony Smith, who transferred from Southmoreland High School was ruled ineligible. As a freshman, Smith passed for 2,110 yards, 22 touchdowns and completed 53% of his passes. He also holds an offer from Syracuse.

Also, girls’ basketball player Peyton Lynch, who transferred from Allderdice to Avonworth, was ruled ineligible for 2025.

Both of those decisions can and will be appealed to the PIAA.

Congratulations to Hopewell’s Logan Triscila!

The Pittsburgh Steelers report to training camp today, members of the Pitt football team will speak today at ACC Media Day in Charlotte and the Hopewell Vikings 2025 season opener is one month away.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Media outlets are also preparing for the start of football season and that includes the Beaver County Times.

Over the last couple of weeks, the last couple of weeks, the Times ran a number of on-line polls where they asked readers to vote for the top returning position players at certain positions.

A few Hopewell Vikings players were included in these polls, and one won at this position.

Congratulations to Hopewell senior Logan Triscilla who was voted as the top returning wide receiver in Beaver County. In his first season as a starting wide receiver, Triscilla finished 2024 with 28 catches for 248 yards and 4 touchdowns.

James Armstrong had the responsibility of being Hopewell’s quarterback despite being only a freshman and it was very apparent that Triscilla was someone that he felt comfortable throwing to and the two developed a nice chemistry. Logan isn’t the fastest player on the field but what makes him an effective player, and a really good wide receiver is he’s reliable- meaning runs precise routes and if the ball is near him, 9 times out of 10, he’s going to catch it.

Triscilla will be an important member of what should be an explosive 2025 Hopewell offense with Nasir Wade, Brody Rock, Tre Cameron, Kingston Krotec, Avery Bokor, Zander Muzy, Vinny Boris and Armstrong.

Hopewell’s 2025 season opener is on August 22nd at Riverside with the home opener taking place on August 29th against New Castle.

Hopewell’s Offense Once Again Looks Lethal in a 7-7 Scrimmage vs. Blackhawk and W. Beaver

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– With the start of the 2025 High School football season just 36 days away, the Hopewell Vikings took part in another 7-7 scrimmage against Western Beaver and Blackhawk.

One thing that continues to look pretty certain and that’s the Vikings offense is going to be lethal and very difficult to contain.


Sophomore quarterback James Armstrong will have a ton of weapons at his disposal, which were on display tonight.

The way it worked was the game consisted of two halves with a 25-minute running clock. Each took started at the opponents 40-yard line, with a 1st down at the 25-yard line and then again at the 10-yard line.

If they failed to do so, the other team took over once again at the 40-yard. The quarterbacks had 4 seconds to throw the ball, or it counted as an incomplete pass. A touchdown counted for 6 points, while an opposing interception counted as 2 points.

HOPEWELL VS. WESTERN BEAVER:
*In their first game, Hopewell took on Western Beaver and both sides of the ball played well. The offense scored all four times they had the ball, and the Vikings defense was able to come up with two turnovers.

Hopewell’s 1st Possession:
–On the very first play, Armstrong hit sophomore wide receiver Tre Cameron on a 40-yard post pattern down the seam for a touchdown. Hopewell 6-0

*Western Beaver converted a 4th play for a touchdown on their first drive and the game was tied at 6.

Hopewell’s 2nd Possession:
–Armstrong connected with senior Logan Triscila on a 11-yard out pattern.
–Armstrong then hit a wide-open Cameron across the middle.
–3rd and 10, Armstrong with an 18-yard TD pass in the corner of the endzone to senior Kingston Krotec, Hopewell 12-6.

Western Beaver 2nd Possession:
–On the first play of the drive, sophomore defensive back Brian Oldham comes up with an interception, Hopewell 14-6.

Hopewell’s 3rd Possession:
–First play from scrimmage, Armstrong hit a streaking Avery Bokor up the right sidelines for a 40-yard TD. Obvious busted coverage by Western Beaver. Hopewell 20-6.

Western Beaver 3rd Possession:
–The second turnover of the game for Hopewell as sophomore cornerback Nasir Wade comes up with an interception. Wade will be a bigtime playmaker on both sides of the ball for Hopewell. Hopewell 22-6.

Hopewell’s 4th Possession:
–Armstrong hit Vinny Boris on a slant pattern as he picked up good YAC.

–Then Armstrong with his 4th TD pass, this time to Triscila, another player that will have a big year for Hopewell. Hopewell 28-6

FINAL SCORE: HOPEWELL 28 WESTERN BEAVER 12

HOPEWELL VS. BLACKHAWK:
*The Hopewell offense continued to roll and came up big at the end, while the defense gave up a few big plays to the Cougars offense.

Hopewell’s 1st Possession:
–Blackhawk scored on their first drive but Hopewell answered as they would all night. Armstrong hit Wade on a slant pattern for 20 yards.
–Armstrong rolled to his left and hit Bokor for 19-yard pass right at the pylon in the endzone.
–Next play, Armstrong connects with Krotec for a 1-yard TD, 6-6

Blackhawk’s 2nd Possession:
–Krotec had a nice defensive play in this drive but Blackhawk would score again, Blackhawk 12-6.

Hopewell’s 2nd Possession:
–Armstrong with a bullet across the middle for 22 yards to Cameron, who made a great play jumping into the air to bring down the pass.
–Next play, Armstrong connects with Triscila down to the 1-yard line.

–Hopewell TD as Armstrong connects with Boris for a 1-yard pass. 12-12

Hopewell’s 3rd Possession:
–Blackhawk near the end of regulation but Hopewell would get one more drive in order to try and tie the game, which is exactly what they did.

–After completions to Boris and Wade, Armstrong once again hooks up with Bokor on a 20-yard TD pass, 18-18.

FINAL SCORE: HOPEWELL 18 BLACKHAWK 18

Believe it or not, the 2025 Hopewell Vikings High School football season opener is just 42 days away!

With the start of football season fast approaching, various media outlets are preparing for it by running various polls and list for top players in various categories.

Locally, the Beaver County Times has started an on-line poll asking readers to vote on top players at various skill positions.

Thus far, the Times has posted on-line voting for Beaver County’s top quarterback, running back and wide receiver and 4 Hopewell Viking players have been included.

Vikings sophomore defensive back Avery Bokor, quarterback James Armstrong, sophomore running back Brody Rock and senior wide receiver Logan Triscila are on the list. You can vote as many times as you’d like.

James Armstrong Showing Growth, Potential as One of Top 2028 QBs

FOX CHAPEL, Pa. — When Hopewell quarterback James Armstrong attended the 2Tenths Top 150 camp prior to playing a snap of high school football in 2024, he flew under the radar.

This year, it was a lot different for the 2028 prospect. The big lefty signal caller went to camp with a Power Four offer from Pitt and was standing out among the underclassmen on the field.

“Last year, when I came to the camp, I feel like I was just tagging along,” Armstrong told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “I wasn’t really one of the main guys there. I was kind of just there, not talking a lot and not getting a lot of reps. This time, I feel like me and a couple of other guys we were the main people that people were looking at. It’s a lot different now because I’m one of the top people everywhere I go.”

As the day progressed, Armstrong worked on his footwork, accuracy and dialing up passes in one-on-one situations and seven-on-seven.

“I feel like I did pretty well. I feel like I showed good work. I could’ve done better on timing of my routes,” Armstrong said.

Watching closely on every rep, 2Tenths quarterback and development coach Mike McMahon sees the potential in Armstrong to be a promising prospect over the next few years.

“He’s big and raw,” McMahon said. “He’s got some athletic ability. I saw him play against North Catholic last year and he did a great job. He’s big, strong, athletic kid. He can throw on the run very well. When you see him in person, he does throw the ball better. I think he throws the ball better in a game situation than he does in this situation. I do think he has some talent. He got to clean some things up a little bit. He’s got some potential.”

Out of all the qualities that Armstrong possesses, it’s his size that’s the most intriguing as he stands at 6-3, 210-pounds and is a dual-threat quarterback.

“The first thing that stands out is his size. He’s a big kid. He runs the ball extremely well. He’s a tough kid. It’s hard to bring him down,” McMahon said.

While Armstrong relies on his mobility, he’s working more on his accuracy and arm strength this offseason. At the 2Tenths camp, he was often talking with 2028 Seton LaSalle quarterback Anthony Smith on different tips he can add to his repertoire.

“I really just like to hear a lot of different opinions about being a quarterback in general because there’s not one set in stone thing or one thing that’s meant for all. Like Anthony Smith, he’s more of a passing quarterback. I’m more of a running quarterback, so I want to hear from him and I’m sure he wants to hear from me about how we like to do things so we can incorporate each other’s games into Friday night,” Armstrong said.

The same goes for any coaches he works with, including McMahon.

“Hearing from Coach McMahon, I like hearing from a lot of quarterback coaches,” he said. “I was just working out with Coach Ray Isaac with the Sniper School and hearing the different things trying to see what works for me because I know that everything that someone teaches me isn’t going to be the same that I like to do, but I just like hearing what they have to say about me to get better.”

It’s been quite the year overall for Armstrong after fulfilling the starting quarterback role at Hopewell as a freshman where he tossed for 1,344 and 10 touchdowns, along with 787 rushing yards and 15 scores on the ground. Since the conclusion of the season, he’s added offers from Pitt, Akron, Sacramento State and Delaware State.

“It really just boosts your confidence up a little bit,” Armstrong said about his status picking up. “It puts a chip on my shoulder because I know eyes are going to be looking at me. I can help out my teammates by showing their greatness and then the coaches will be on them too. It just makes me feel good to help out my teammates and help out myself.”

As camp season has come to a close, Armstrong now looks towards the remainder of the offseason as time to improve on specific areas of his game.

“I really just want to be a better passer and be better at timing up my routes and reading defenses because that’s a big thing. I have a good arm, I can throw any ball on the field, but I want to make sure that I can be a true quarterback that I don’t just run,” he said.

With eyes on his sophomore season, it also means more of an opportunity to check out schools he is interested in, including a return trip to Pitt, along with new stops at programs like Penn State, Indiana, Duke and others.

“I’m going to be worrying about that a lot more this year,” Armstrong said. “Going into my ninth-grade year and coming out, I wasn’t worried about that. I was worried about getting better.

“I want to get out, see places and get more connections.”

Hopewell’s Julian Baldwin Suffers Season-Ending Injury

Adversity is something that every person has to deal with at some point in their lives. It’s not a matter of if but when.

Unfortunately for Hopewell football player Julian Baldwin he’s been hit with some unfortunate news that he’s going to have work to overcome.

The upcoming senior suffered an injury that will cost him his entire senior football season. Baldwin DID NOT get injured in a team football event.

Doctors have given him an initial diagnosis of being sidelined anywhere from 4-6 months. This is devasting news for JB as he’s been working hard all offseason to improve his skills and get ready for his last season of high school football.

“If you know me, you know football is everything to me. This game is the thing I love, and it means more to me than anything, but due to unfortunate events on June 8th, I broke my tibia,” says Baldwin. “My head is held very high and I’m trying to stay as positive as I can, but I was given unfortunate news that I will be out 4-6 months, which would be my whole senior season. My family and I have talked things through, and we are figuring the future out.”

“I’m very thankful for all the people that have given me support throughout my journey and I could not thank you more. This is going to be a long hard journey back but I will get back. Go Vikes!”

This is also difficult news for the Hopewell team as Baldwin was the quarterback of the Vikings secondary and their primary signal caller. Coach Mottes will now call upon someone else to fill Baldwin’s void.

JB this is no doubt unfortunate but it’s only a small bump in your journey. Knowing your work ethic and determination, you’ll be back rehabbing, working out and on the field before you know it.

Good Night For Hopewell HS Football in 7-on-7 Games

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– The big sports night at Hopewell High School tonight started with a 7-on-7 football game between Hopewell, Aliquippa and New Castle.

In the first game, Hopewell took on Aliquippa, followed by New Castle vs. Aliquippa and finished up with Hopewell vs. New Castle.

HOPEWELL VS. ALIQUIPPA:
-This game was dominated by the defenses as the opposing secondaries did a good job of taking away anything deep.

*On their 2nd drive, Hopewell got on the board first. Things got get up by a big gain from quarterback James Armstrong to Brody Rock. The drive was completed by a TD pass from Armstrong to sophomore wide receiver Avery Bokor. Hopewell led 6-0.

*Aliquippa tied the game at 6 but Hopewell had an answer. Armstrong connected with senior wide out Logan Triscila followed by a long TD from Armstrong to Rock. Hopewell led 12-6.

*Aliquippa tied the game at 12 but the Vikings responded with another TD. On 3rd down, Armstrong hit Rock for a first down. Then next play, Armstrong connected on an inside slant in the endzone to Cameron. Hopewell led 18-12.

*On their last drive, Aliquippa tied the game at 18 and the game looked like it would end in a 18-18 tie but that wasn’t the case. Stay tuned for the end result.

HOPEWELL VS. NEW CASTLE:
-It took a while for Hopewell’s offense to get going against Aliquippa but that wasn’t the case against New Castle. The Vikings had it in high gear from the start and looked really good in a 30-18 win. In fact, every time the Hopewell offense had the ball, they scored a touchdown.

*1st Drive: On 3rd down, Armstrong connected on a corner of the endzone TD to senior Kingston Krotec. Hopewell 6-0.

*2nd Drive: On the very first play, Armstrong connected with Rock on a 40-yard TD pass up the right sidelines. Rock is going to be an extremely different matchup for opposing teams trying to guard him this season because of his size and speed.  Hopewell 12-6.

*3rd Drive: On the 2nd play, Armstrong scanned the field and found sophomore running back Bruiser Wade in the back of the endzone. Hopewell 18-6.

*4th Drive: Once again, Armstrong found Rock deep up the right sidelines to a TD, Hopewell 24-12.

*5th Drive: Armstrong rolled out to his left and threw deep and connected with Rock in the back of the endzone. 30-18.

FINAL: HOPEWELL 30 NEW CASTLE 18

ALIQUIPPA VS. HOPEWELL:
-As I mentioned, this game appeared to end in an 18-18 tie however, Aliquippa didn’t want things ending in a tie and after the Hopewell/New Castle game, they wanted to resolve things to determine a winner. Each team started at the opposing teams 15-yard line and had 3 plays to score.

*Aliquippa got the ball first and scored to go ahead 24-18. Hopewell took over and on the very first play, Armstrong connected with Cameron for a TD. Game tied at 24.

*On Aliquippa’s next possession, former Aliquippa player came up with an interception, which gave Hopewell 2 points and a 26-24 win!

Hopewell Football Competing Today at W&J 7-on-7 Tournament

Although the officially high school football season doesn’t begin for another couple months, but that doesn’t mean the team isn’t involved in serious competition.

Today is one of those days as Coach Mottes and members of his team will be competing in the prestigious W&J 7-on-7 Tournament.

In this one-day tournament, the Vikings will get a chance to compete and measure themselves against talented teams from Western Pennsylvania and beyond. Teams that have signed up to compete in this 7-7 competition are Aliquippa, Upper St. Clair, Hempfield, South Fayette, Wheeling Park, Beaver, Laurel Highlands, Washington, Ringgold, OLSH, Blackhawk, Bridgeport, Shaler, Washington (WV), North Catholic and Uniontown.

The way this works is that these teams are split into 3 different sections of 6 teams. The 3 teams in a section will play against each other with 2 teams eventually advancing to the next round. After that there’s a semifinal and an eventual championship game.

Let’s hope it’s a long day for the Hopewell team in Washington County! Competition for Hopewell begins at 9:50 AM, the second round starts at 12:45 PM, semifinals at 2 PM and the championship game scheduled to begin at 3:40 PM.

For the most part the skill position players on offense and defense will be competing in this.

Hopewell is also involved in a 7-on-7 tournament this summer with teams from Farrell, New Castle and Neshannock. That began last week with Hopewell defeating all 3 teams soundly.

That round of games took place at Farrell but coming up on Thursday, the competition will take place at Tony Dorsett Stadium. Action will get underway at 5 PM.
