Hopewell Boys Track and Field Cruise to Win Over Blackhawk

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– The first day of April brought out the sunshine for the first home meet of the spring at Tony Dorsett Stadium, and also brought out some big personal best performances, as the boys track and field team defeated Blackhawk, 103-47.

The Vikings flexed their strengths in the sprints and hurdles, taking the top 2 spots in the 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles, while also winning 400m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay.

Josh Brunton won the 100m with a big personal best time of 11.53, and Zach Kovell took second. Freshman Nasir “Bruiser” Wade won the 200m in an easy 23.36, with Brunton in second. Zach Lucas won the 110m hurdles in 16.37, with Luke McGrail close behind. He also won the 300m hurdles in 45.30, right next to Julian Baldwin in 45.31. Zach Kovell won the 400m in dominant fashion and also anchored the 4×100 and 4x 400 relays to commanding victories.

Freshman Jack Biega and senior Charlie Houston also went 1-2 in the 800m, crossing in s:20 and 2:21. They were also part of the winning 4x800m relay team. Antony Flitcraft had a busy day, taking 2nd in both the 1600m and 3200m, as well as running on the 4×800.

In the field events, Sam Milligan won the pole vault with a 9’0″ clearance, and Chris Holland took second. Nick Adams led a Hopewell sweep of the triple jump, winning on one jump of 39’4″. Andrew Gaguzis and Thomas Pipkins took 2nd and 3rd to shut Blackhawk out of the event. Freshman Avery Bokor went off in the high jump, winning an impressive 5’10” clearance, and had several good attempts at 6’0″. Bruiser was third with 5’8″.

Michael DiNardo pulled out an upset victory in the javelin with his best throw of the season (118’8″). Dom Gaughan broke the century mark for the first time in the discus, and his 101’3″ throw was good for 3rd. He also took 2nd in the shot put.

The boys will be back in action next Monday, April 7th for a tri-meet against Avonworth and Beaver. The meet will be held at Avonworth.
