Hopewell HS Baseball Team Stays in Post-Gazette Rankings

0 20 1 minutes read

After cracking the rankings for the first time last week, the Hopewell High School baseball team remains in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s WPIAL baseball rankings.

For the second week in a row, HC Morgan Singletary’s team finds themselves as the No. 4 ranked team in Class 4A. The interesting part is that the Vikings are joined by two other section foes, which speaks to the competition level of their section.

Something else to point out is the quality/competitive non-section schedule that Hopewell has played this season. It’s one thing to play a competitive schedule but it’s another thing to also win those games which they’ve done.

Hopewell defeated Avonworth by the score of 11-1 and Avonworth is currently ranked No. 3 in Class 3A. They also thoroughly defeated Shenango, 17-3, and they’re also ranked No. 3 in Class 2A. Two other impressive non-section wins also game against Shaler, 7-2 and against Montour, 4-3.

Montour is currently 6-2 and in 3rd place in 5A/Section 4, while Shaler has won 2 of the last 3 WPIAL 5A championships.

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the focus is still on qualifying for the playoffs.

Despite owning a record of 9-4, 5-3 in section and being tied for second place, a playoff berth hasn’t been clinched yet. In fact, no team in Section 1 has clinched a playoff spot, which is hard to believe but once again speaks to the talented teams in this section.

Hopewell will have a non-section game tomorrow against Serra Catholic (7-5/2-2) before opening an important 2-game series on Monday against Central Valley.
