Hopewell Township- Once again, the Hopewell Junior High Softball team found themselves playing in a doubleheader, this one against Montour.
For those not aware, doubleheaders in junior high or high school baseball or softball are only 5 innings, not the normal 7 innings.
Also, if a game is tied after 5 innings, it ends in a tie and no extra innings are played. The reason I bring that up is because that’s how one of today’s game ended.
In Game One, Montour battled back to earn a 6-6 tie with Hopewell. In Game Two, Hopewell led from start to finish and came away with a 5-1 victory.
With the win, Hopewell improves their overall record to 6-6-2.
Game One Recap:
In Game One, this was a back and forth contest with Montour scoring a run in the final inning to tie the game.
Offensively for Hopewell, Lillian Otto, Sam Holsinger and Lily Cain each collected 2 hits for Hopewell.
In terms of run producer, Hopewell’s middle of the order did their jobs as Otto (2 RBI), Izzy Mutkus (2 RBI) and Abby Babinsack drove in 5 of the 6 RBIs. The other run producer was Cain.
A couple of the big hits of the game were a long RBI triple in the first by Otto to drive in Holsinger. That was followed by a deep 2-run double by Mutkus.
On the mound, Babinsack had a nice game going 5 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 earned runs, 0 walks and 2 strikeouts.
Final Score: Hopewell 6 Montour 6Â
Game Two Recap-Â
This game was highlighted by the pitching performance of Alyssa Phillips, who was completely dominanting. Philips went 5 innings, allowing only 2 hits, 1 run (0 earned runs) and striking out 11 of the 15 batters she faced.
Philips struck out two Montour batters in each of the first 3 innings but striking out the side in the 4th inning and then two more in the 5th inning.
Phillips helped herself out in the 2nd inning as she drove in Gianna Rossi for the first run of the game.
Hopewell increased the lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning after an RBI double by Izzy Mutkus scored Sam Holsinger. Hopewell then scored two more runs on a Montour error following a bunt from Alyssa Gray. Hopewell led 4-0.
Hopewell made it 5-0 in the 4th inning courtesy an RBI single by Sienna Zon, which scored Holsinger, who walked.
Final Score: Hopewell 5 Montour 1Â
