Day 2 of the WPIAL Swim Championships, Hopewell Sets Another School Record

VSN wanted to follow up with the Hopewell HS Swim teams results from the WPIAL Swimming Championships.

After Thursday’s Day One, here were the Hopewell highlights from Day Two on Friday, which included a new school record.

*Joey Gregory posted his best time in the 100 Freestyle (51.19), ending his varsity swimming career.
*Hazel McCowin broke her own school record and took 4th overall in the 100 backstroke (58.87).
*Mitchell Ryan posted his best time in the 100 Backstroke (1:00.87), ending his varsity swimming career.

*Our Girls 400 Freestyle relay of Lindsey Brown, Ava Yoder, Emma Driscoll, and Hazel McCowin dropped over 10 seconds and placed 12th overall. 3:34.71.

We wanted to give a big congratulations to Hopewell HC Kathi Lopez and all her swimmers. It was a tremendous season that included a ton of individual and team accomplishments.

Hopewell Highlights from Day 1 of the WPIAL Swim Championship

The Hopewell High School swim team had a fantastic first day on Thursday at the WPIAL Swim Championships held at the University of Pittsburgh Tree Pools.

In total, HC Kathi Lopez’s program has 9 swimmers scheduled to compete in 22 events over this 2-day event.

Here were the highlights from Thursday’s Day One:

*Girl’s 200 Medley relay of Ava Yoder, Hazel McCowin, Emma Driscoll, and Lindsey Brown posted their best time of the season 1:58.44.
*Boy’s 200 Medley relay of Mitchell Ryan, Joel Olshanski, Tyler Oliver, and Joey Gregory posted their best time 1:52.92.
*Joey Gregory posted his best time in the 200 free 1:53.69.
*Hazel McCowin again broke her own school record and took 2nd overall in the 200 IM 2:10.59.
*Tyler Oliver had his last individual event and posted a 59.70 in the 100 Butterfly, just a few tenths off his best.
*Girl’s 200 free relay of Lindsey Brown, Evelyn Cagnon, Ava Yoder, and Emma Driscoll had a great swim!  1:50.84.
*The Boy’s 200 free relay posted their best time 1:38.87. This was an emotional last swim together for our Senior Boys Mitchell Ryan, Tyler Oliver, Joel Olshanski and Joey Gregory.

Day Two will take place this morning and throughout the afternoon.

Best of Luck to Hopewell HS Swimmers Competing at WPIAL Championships!

It will be a big next couple of days for members of the Hopewell High School Swim team.

Starting on Thursday and continuing to Friday, the WPIAL Swimming Championships will be held at the University of Pittsburgh Tree Pools.

Throughout the regular season, swimmers across the WPIAL attempted to reach certain times in their events, which qualified them to compete in the WPIAL Championships.

It’s exciting to see that a large numbers of swimmers from Coach Kathi Lopez’s program were able to do that.

Vikings Sports Now would like to wish the following Hopewell swimmers the best of luck tomorrow and hopefully at the end of the event, they’ll be on the podium receiving a medal.

Tremendous Weekend for Hopewell Swim Team at Beaver County Invitational

This weekend was the Beaver County Invitational, a huge event on the calendar for high school swim teams in area, and it turned out to be a very successful event for members of the Hopewell HS swim team.

A number of Hopewell swimmers posted their best times of the year, made the podium to receive medal, made the WPIAL cuts and even broke a pool and meet record!

HC Kathi Lopez tells VSN that she is most proud that most of her swimmers posted their best times of the year at this meet.

The Boys 200 Medley and 200 Free Relay team of Mitchell Ryan, Joel Olshanski, Tyler Oliver and Joey Gregory had been chasing cuts all season and were finally able to achieve their goal of qualifying for the WPIAL Championships. Tyler Oliver also achieved his WPIAL cut in the 100 Flys as did Mitchell Ryan in the 100 Back.

A huge congratulations to Hazel McCowin as she broke the meet and pool record in the 100 Breaststroke.

Hopewell HS Swim Team Meet Results vs. Central Valley

The Hopewell HS Swim team were in the pool last night as they took on rival Central Valley in a meet.

Once again, both Hopewell teams performed well despite being shorthanded. The Hopewell Girls team lost by the score of 47-41 and were competing without one of their fastest swimmers, senior Ava Yoder.

Meanwhile, the Hopewell boys finished with a 49-27 win.

Some of the highlights from the meet were the performance of freshman Evelyn Cagnon in the 500 free and Emma Driscoll in the 100 backstroke, both girls qualified for the upcoming MAC Tournament with their performances. Also, Tyler Oliver again improved his 100 Fly and is now only 2 tenths off his WPIAL cut, his personal best.

Also, Cassidy Bellemo (200 Free), Cagnon (500 free) and Joe Bulebush (500 free) all took off significant times in their events, each posting personal bests.

Hopewell/West Allegheny Hopewell HS Swim Meet Results

Following an exciting meet against Seton LaSalle, the Hopewell HS Swim team took on West Allegheny on Thursday.

Although West Allegheny came out on top, plenty of Hopewell swimmers turned in fantastic performances and the great competition spurred lots of fast swims for the Vikings.

Plenty of Hopewell freshmen and sophomores made big improvements. The meet highlight was freshman Holden Webster posting his best time in his 500 freestyle and getting his MAC cut in the event.

The Hopewell HS Boys and Girls Swim team were back in the water yesterday as they took on the Seton LaSalle Rebels.

It ended up being a very competitive meet as the boys came away with a 69-60 win, while the girls narrowly lost by the score of 58-53.

Hopewell vs. Blackhawk HS Swim Meet Results

The Hopewell HS swim team had an exciting meet on Thursday against Blackhawk.

The girls team tied their meet with the Cougars, 43-43, while the boys lost by the score of 55-37.

The meet was very competitive with lots of close finishes.

Individually, many Vikings swimmers posted best times and had quite a few 1st place finishes. One of the meet highlights was, even though Joey Gregory came in 2nd place in his 100 free, he was able to drop a second in the event and bettered his seed for the WPIAL meet.

Huge Day for Hopewell Swim Team at West Allegheny Christmas Invitational, School Records Broken

The Hopewell Vikings HS Swim team had a fantastic meet on Saturday competing in the West Allegheny Christmas Invitational!

Coach Lopez’s swimmers had a ton of personal best times, lots of podium stands, some WPIAL cuts and even a Hopewell school record was broken!

The highlights of the met were Hazel McCowin not only taking first place in both the 200 IM AND 100 Backstroke but breaking her own school record in the IM and also breaking the school record in the 100 back!

Hopewell HS Swim Team Splits Meet Against Keystone Oaks

The Hopewell HS swim team had one more match before the Christmas break takes place as the Vikings took on Keystone Oaks.

In terms of team results, the boys won and the girls lost. However, the Coach Lopez’s team was without 4 of their girls’ swimmers. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to see what the girls’ team can truly do as have yet to have a full squad for any of the meets this season. A positive of that is that it’s giving swimmers on the team experience and the opportunity to step up.

In terms of individual achievements, congrats to Hazel McCowin (200 Free) and Joey Gregory (200 and 100 Free) for making the WPIAL tournament cut. Also, Tyler Oliver made the MAC Tournament cut in the 50 Free.
