Hopewell QB James Armstrong Receives Offer from Bill Belichick and North Carolina

On the heels of the best game of his young high school football career, Hopewell sophomore quarterback James Armstrong received some big recruiting news this morning.

Armstrong received news that his second Power 4 offer comes from legendary HC Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Last season, Armstrong received his first Power 4 offer from Pat Narduzzi and Pitt.

This past Friday in a 51-50 loss to Beaver, the 6’3″, 220-pound left-handed quarterback threw for 346 yards, ran for 263 yards and 6 TD’s.

As we’ve forecasted and it really isn’t a surprise, Armstrong’s recruitment will be picking up a bunch this season and likely over the coming weeks and months.

With his rifle for an arm, ability to keep plays alive and power he’s able to run with, his talent is obvious, and it was only a matter of time before major programs started offering.

Despite Pitt taking a leap of faith and offering last season as a freshman, schools have been cautious only because of his age. With North Carolina offering today, look for the flood gate of offers to begin.

At this time, no national recruiting service has given him a star rating but that too will change soon as he’s a 4 or 5-star talent.

WATCH: Incredible Highlights Last Night from Hopewell QB James Armstrong

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– The Hopewell Vikings football team suffered their first loss of the 2025 season as they lost to Beaver, 51-50, in an incredibly exciting game.

Despite the loss, the fans at Tony Dorsett Stadium witnessed an incredible performance by Hopewell sophomore quarterback James Armstrong.

Fans and opposing teams have been watching Armstrong’s athletic ability for years now in football, baseball and basketball but last night was his best performance as a high school quarterback.

How about this stat line, 22 carries for 263 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns along with 346 yards passing and 4 passing touchdowns. That’s a combined 609 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Currently, Armstrong holds a Power 4 offer from Pat Narduzzi and Pitt. The question is when will teams follow Pitt’s lead? Once that happens, something tells me the offers will continue to role in.

Hopewell Loses Heartbreaker to Beaver, 51-50, in WPIAL Game of the Year

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– Wow, where to begin.

Let’s start with the obvious. The fans that packed Tony Dorsett Stadium were treated to what will be the WPIAL Game of the Year for 2025 and a game that both teams will remember for a lifetime. That’s not an exaggeration, that’s a fact.

In a game that lasted 3 and a half hours and included over 200 plays (which is incredible for a high school game), Beaver made one more play than Hopewell and came away with a 51-50 win. Credit both Hopewell and Beaver for the show they put on last night.

It’s impossible to reap a game that featured so many highlights and turning points, so I’ll just mention the key moments and the incredible stat lines that were produced by both teams.

Let’s start with the play at quarterback for both teams. Aside from being the game of the year, I’d be willing to bet that you won’t see a better performance by two quarterbacks in the same game like you saw last night.

Hopewell sophomore quarterback James Armstrong turned in the best performance of his young career as he threw for 346 yards, 4 passing touchdowns and also rushed the ball 22 times for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns. For the game, Armstrong collected 609 total yards and 6 touchdowns.

Equally as impressive was Beaver senior quarterback Travis Clear who went 18 of 38 for 391 yards and 2 touchdowns. Clear made a number of impressive down field throws into tight coverage.

GAME RECAP-
*Hopewell got on the board first on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Armstrong to senior wide receiver Kingston Krotec, Hopewell 7-0.

*After stopping Beaver, Hopewell took over and on the first play, sophomore Nasir Wade produced an incredible 86-yard TD run. Hopewell,14-0.

*Still in the first quarter, after Ty Cosky kicked a 34-yard FG, Hopewell answered as Armstrong hit Avery Bokor with a 35-yard TD pass. A perfectly placed pass and a great snag by Bokor, who didn’t have much room in the corner of the endzone to bring it in, Hopewell 21-3.

*Beaver would then score the next 20 points of the game to take their first lead 23-21 in the 3rd quarter.

*Hopewell would re-take the lead as Armstrong threw a 45-yard TD pass to Bokor. The ball seemed to deflect off Tre Cameron and into the hands of Bokor, who was directly behind Cameron. Hopewell tried for 2 points and were unsuccessful, so the score was Hopewell 27-23.
*Both teams then traded touchdowns, which made the score Hopewell 34-30.
*Armstrong then turned in an incredible run (and that’s an understatement) as he went 70-yards, breaking through a number of Beaver defenders. Hopewell’s lead increased to 41-30.


*In the 4th quarter, Hopewell was driving but Beaver came up with a stop and forced a FG attempt, which Rocco Marcantonio connected on from 34-yards. Hopewell led 44-30.

*But Beaver immediately answered with a quick TD to get within 7 points and then scored the tying touchdown with less than 2 minutes in the game.
*With approximately 1:30 left in the game, Beaver Junior Marino intercepted a pass and ran it in from 40 yards to give Beaver a 51-44 lead.
*Hopewell still had 1:20 left on the clock and 1 timeout left to try and tie the game. The Hopewell offense drove up the field and with 9 seconds left on a 4th and 5, Armstrong threw an 11-year TD pass to Logan Triscilla to make the score 51-50 Beaver.

*Instead of going for the PAT to tie the game, Hopewell was aggressive and tried to win the game with a 2-point conversion but were stopped at the 1-yard line.

FINAL SCORE: BEAVER 51 HOPEWELL 50

*My biggest take from the game and something that I talked about in my preview was the play of both lines and in this game, Beaver’s offense and defensive line played better than Hopewell’s. Also, too many big plays allowed by the Hopewell secondary, which need to get cleaned up. The good thing is that it’s one game and these things can and will get cleaned up.

This is no doubt a disappointing loss for Hopewell, who drops their first section game, and it won’t get any easier as they have to travel to No. 1 ranked Avonworth next Friday.

While being disappointing, the sun did come up this morning and plenty of football left in the season.

James Armstrong Receives GameDay Invite to Pitt

For the second consecutive weekend, Hopewell’s James Armstrong has received another GameDay invite to a Power 4 football program.

Last weekend, the sophomore quarterback was in State College for Penn State’s season opener vs. Nevada. On Saturday, he’ll make the short trip to Pittsburgh to watch Pitt as they host Central Michigan.

Pat Narduzzi and the Panthers were the first Power 4 program to extend Armstrong an offer, which took place last season.

It’s somewhat surprising more Power 4 programs haven’t offered yet but that’s just a matter of time.

Through two games, the 6’3″, 220-pound quarterback is 30 of 38 for 447 yards, 3 TD’s and 0 interceptions. Armstrong has also rushed the ball 26 times for 195 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns.

For those not familiar, a GameDay visits consists of players being on the field during pre-game warmups, possibly a chance to talk with coaches, during the game they’ll sit in the stands with other recruits. Depending on the player, the recruit may go into the locker room after the game.

Defense Dominates as Hopewell Overwhelms New Castle, 31-6

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– One year ago, the Hopewell Vikings football team traveled to New Castle and were overwhelmed by New Castle’s speed and big play ability, losing 42-19.

Fast forward to 2025 and the game story was completely flipped as Hopewell’s defense completely suffocated New Castle’s offense and lived in the opposing backfield as the Vikings moved to 2-0 with a 31-6 win.

New Castle quarterback Marino Graham was pressured the entire evening by the Vikings defense, led by Brian McCabe, Nick Thomas, Keith Young, Aris Haniotes and Tyler Schroeder. For the second straight week, the Vikings defense completely shut down their opponents run game, this week limiting New Castle to just 27 yards on 20 yards.

Hopewell nearly recorded a shutout for the second consecutive week, as New Castle registered their only touchdown on a 65-yard TD from Graham to Kai Cox. Other than that big play, they simply couldn’t move the football.

Give credit to Hopewell head coach Matt Mottes, who also serves as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, along with his defensive staff of Mark Knochel (LB’s coach, assistant DC), Jeremy Martini (DL coach), Antwon Townsend (assistant LB) and Scott Aguglia (assistant DB). These guys have done a tremendous job with these players.

Keep in mind, a year ago, Hopewell only held the opponent to single digit points once all season and have done it twice already in 2025.


Taking a look at the offense, Hopewell scored 31 points but due to turnovers, they left a lot of points on the field and honestly, could’ve/should’ve scored 50+.

That being said, it says a lot about the potential and skill level of this team when I’m nitpicking about scoring 31 points.

Sophomore quarterback James Armstrong led the way for Hopewell as he completed 16 of 19 passes for 229 yards, while also rushing for 109 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Senior Logan Triscilla had another steady/spectacular game with 5 catches for 96 yards, including a great catch on a 40+yard flea flicker.

Other Hopewell pass catchers included sophomore running back Nasir Wade with 5 for 34 yards, Tre Cameron 2 for 23 yards, Avery Bokor 2 for 7 yards, Kingston Krotec 1 for 5 yards and George Tafkov 1 for 4 yards. Wade also rushed the ball 13 times for 51 yards.

Next up for Hopewell will be a road trip to take on the Ambridge Bridgers before returning home on September 12th against Beaver.

Hopewell QB James Armstrong Invited to Attend Penn State Opener Along with Prestigious Photo Shoot

It could be a big weekend for Hopewell sophomore quarterback James Armstrong.

Not only does Armstrong and his Viking teammates have a chance to go 2-0 with a win over a talented New Castle team, but Boo will be making a GameDay visit for Penn State’s season opener on Saturday vs. Nevada.

Armstrong received the invite from Penn State assistant head coach Terry Smith and Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin. This invite comes on the heels of Smith being at Tony Dorsett Stadium last Friday for Hopewell’s season opener vs. Riverside.

In that game, Armstrong threw for 263 yards, 3 touchdowns, while also rushing 5 times for 78 yards and a TD.

While Pitt was the first Power 4 program to offer Armstrong, Penn State has shown interest since the beginning of last season, including extending him invites to various prospect days in 2024.

At this point, it seems just a matter of when, not if, Penn State extends Armstrong an offer.

Along with being in attendance for the game, Armstrong has also been invited to attend a photo shoot being conducted by Tom Lemming of CBS Sports. Lemming hosts a national television show on high school sports and published the nation’s largest Prep football magazine.

According to Lemming, this photo shoot is for the premiere players on the East Coast, and the photos will be used for the magazine, their Twitter feed and also for the All-American teams that they choose including the US Army game, which each player would be considered for.

So far, so good as Boo was the best player on the field and finished with 263 passing yards, 78 yards rushing and 4 total touchdowns.

Hopewell Near Perfect in 56-0 Shutout of Riverside in Season Opener

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– Coming into last night’s game, the concern was that the Hopewell players were reading and hearing too much from the outside world/media about how talented they were, and it could reflect in their performance.

As one parent repeatedly tells me, ‘These players need to go out and do it first’.

Well Friday night, the Vikings certainly came out ready to play and did it as they didn’t take their foot off the pedal for the entire game. At the end of four quarters, the scoreboard read- Hopewell 56 Riverside 0.

For Hopewell, it was their first shutout on opening night since 2008 when they defeated Knoch 20-0 and their most lopsided opener since 2006 when they shutout Carrick, 58-0.

Hopewell’s dynamic offense was on full display as the 1st team offense scored touchdowns on all 8 of their possessions.

The stat sheet showed they balanced as the Vikings rushed for 212 yards on 17 carries and passed the ball for 268 yards.

While the offense will get the headlines, Hopewell’s defense was equally as impressive.

The defensive line was as good as advertised led by Keith Young, Aris Haniotes and Nick Thomas but for me, a huge story was the play of a couple Hopewell linebackers. George Tafkov and Zander Muzy played unbelievable games and for Muzy, in my opinion, it was his best game in his 4 years at Hopewell. At times, he was unblockable at linebacker and around the ball carrier all night.

VSN also wanted to give a shoutout to Hopewell offensive coordinator Zach Rosa, who dialed up all the right plays and was able to do a near impossible job of getting everyone touches.

HOPEWELL/RIVERSIDE RECAP-
*After holding Riverside’s offense to a 3 and out, the Hopewell offense got going. On 3rd and 5, Armstrong ran for 18 yards on a designed run to the left side of the line. Boo did a tremendous job tonight of staying in the pocket and looking to throw instead of immediately running after his initial read wasn’t open. Later in the drive, Armstrong connected with Avery Bokor for 17 yards and then on the next play, Armstrong once again, kept the ball and sprinted to the endzone from 17 yards. Hopewell led 7-0.

*On Riverside’s second drive, they had a 3rd and 2 from midfield but Haniotes came up with a sack as he overpowered the Riverside left tackle. On 4th and 6, the Panthers went for it and were stopped as junior Tyler Schroeder came up with his first sack of the season.

*Hopewell took over at their own 49 and on the second play of the drive, Triscila took a WR screen and ran for 17 yards. Nice YAC by Logan on that play. The drive was eventually capped off on a 21-yard TD run by Nasir Wade, Hopewell led 14-0. On the night, Wade only had 5 carries but ran for 103 yards.

*Riverside’s 3rd drive ended up being a 7-minute drive but in the end, Hopewell kept them out of the endzone. The Panthers converted a 3rd and 19 as they ran for 66 yards down inside the Hopewell 10-yard line. That was their only big play of the game. However, the defense stepped up as on 4th and Goal from the 3-yard line, Bokor sniffed out a WR screen and came up with a tackle for loss.

*Despite starting their 3rd drive from inside Riverside’s 10-yard line, it didn’t take long for Hopewell to flip the field. Following a 14-yard run by Armstrong, Wade busted loose for a 59-yard run, which was followed by a 7-yard TD run (his second of the game), Hopewell led 21-0.

*Riverside’s 4th drive didn’t last long, just 3 plays as Muzzy, Tafkov and Bokor all came up with big hits to prevent Riverside from going anywhere.

*A 64-yard punt return by Bokor down to the Riverside 1-yard was called back by a penalty but it only prevented the inevitable. First play of the drive was a 12-yard pass to Kingston Krotec on a crossing route, followed by a great individual play by Triscila who stretched to reach the ball and then was able to keep his feet in bounds for another 12-yard snag. Next play, tremendous job by Armstrong to move around in the pocket, stay patient and with great touch, flipped a 31-yard pass up the right sideline to Krotec. Next play, Armstrong connected with Triscila for an 11-yard TD as Logan went up to get the ball and made a catch that Randy Moss would’ve been proud of. Hopewell led 28-0.

*Riverside’s 5th drive lasted one play as Tafkov made a diving interception at midfield.

*Then with timing running out in the first half, Rosa called for a screen pass and Armstrong dumped it off to Wade, who ran 31 yards down to the Riverside 11-yard line. Next play, another Hopewell scored their 5th TD of the half as Armstrong found a wide open Krotec in the left corner of the endzone, Hopewell 35-0.

*Hopewell got the ball to start the second half and took just 3 plays to score as Armstrong threw a strike to Cameron, who then ran for 31 yards. Next play, on a designed run, Armstrong ran for 23 yards up the left sidelines down to the Riverside 1-yard line. Tafkov then got rewarded for his tremendous game as he took the handoff and powered his way in from the 1-yard line, Hopewell led 42-0.

*For the second straight defensive drive, Hopewell came up with an interception as Cameron broke perfectly on the ball, pulled it in and ran all the way to the Riverside 13-yard line.

*Josh Brunton then replaced Wade at running back and got the job done. First play, Josh, with a great speed, sprinted for 11 yards down to the 2-yard line. Next play, he muscled his way in for a TD, Hopewell led 49-0.

*Still in the 3rd quarter, because Riverside had their starters in, Hopewell kept some of their first team players in it resulted in the final touchdown of the game as Armstrong hit Cameron up the seam with a perfectly placed 31-yard TD.

The 4th quarter allowed the Hopewell staff to get the entire roster on field as backup quarterback Evan McCabe along with Maddox Fattore, Brian Olden, Roman Amadio, Emma DiCicco, Grant Houy got in and made some plays.

FINAL SCORE: HOPEWELL 56 RIVERSIDE 0

WATCH: 1-on-1 w/ Hopewell Quarterback James Armstrong

Three more days until the official start of the Hopewell Vikings 2025 football season.

Coming off a record of 4-6, HC Matt Mottes enters this season with a talented team on both sides of the ball.

The Vikings will have an improved defense that will have a lot more depth than one year ago.

Special teams will be important, especially kick and punt coverage. In terms of field goals, they’ll have one of the best kickers in the WPIAL, Rocco Marcantonio.

The offense is what will drive this team and it will be led by sophomore quarterback James Armstrong.

This afternoon, VSN had the chance to talk with Armstrong about a variety of topics and the growth and maturity he’s made from one year ago was very evident.

Hopewell Impressive on Both Sides of Ball in Shutout of Ellwood City

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– Although it was just a scrimmage, there were plenty of things to be excited about after watching the Hopewell Vikings performance against Ellwood City.

The first team offensive and defensive had three possessions with Hopewell coming out with a 13-0 win (should’ve been 20-0, LOL, I’ll explain).

Just to set the scenario, the first two possessions of the game had each offensive getting 10 snaps, regardless of the outcome. In other words, if Hopewell scored a touchdown on play No. 6, they’d still get to keep the ball for 4 more plays.

On the third possession, it was run in game like scenario, meaning it was down and distance. If they didn’t convert a 3rd down, unless they were deep in the opposing team’s territory, the offensive team would lose possession of the ball.

MY THREE BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS:
1) Nasir “Bruiser” Wade Is Special: It was my first time seeing Wade in a game and it didn’t take very long to see that this kid is special. The sophomore running back was the best player on the field today. His combination of speed, strength and breakaway speed is going to make Hopewell’s offensive special over the next 3 seasons. The scary part for opposing defenses will be trying to game plan for Wade and the Vikings passing game with James Armstrong. Not to mention when Armstrong is used as a designed runner.

2) Aris Haniotes Was Unblockable: Earlier I mentioned Wade was the best player on the field, that was a tough call to make because Haniotes was 1B. The junior defensive end resembled Pittsburgh Steeler superstar T.J. Watt this morning. Haniotes was constantly in the Ellwood City backfield because of his lightning speed and power off the edge. It was only a scrimmage, but man did Haniotes look good.

3) Hopewell’s Depth: Looking back, possibly the most encouraging part of today’s performance was that Hopewell played this well and did so without 5 starters. Sophomore Brody Rock (RB/LB), Senior Brian McCabe (OL/DL), Junior Keith Young (OL/DL), Senior Josh Brunton (CB/RB) and DB Julian Baldwin missed today’s scrimmage with injuries. Today’s effort speaks of the depth that’s exists on this team, which all winning teams need to have. Young and McCabe will be huge parts of Hopewell’s defensive line and Rock proved last year how valuable he is on both sides of the ball.

-Justin Shegog with a sack due to great coverage by Hopewell’s secondary.
-Once again nice coverage leads to sack by Nick Thomas.
-EC gets to the 1-yard line but Hopewell forces a fumble that EC recovers for 5-yard loss.
-On 4th down, Nick Thomas comes up with a sack.

1st and 10, Wade runs for a 70-yard touchdown as he starts right, cuts back left and runs away from the defenders. However, the refs called a penalty on something completely away from the play, that frankly, I didn’t see. Although the scoreboard didn’t register it, I count that as a touchdown.
*Because of the 10-yard penalty, Hopewell went to 1st and 20 and weren’t able to convert a first down.

Hopewell’s 3rd Defensive Possession:
-1st down, Haniotes with another sack as he shows tremendous speed off the edge.
-2nd down, Tafkov with a nice tackle for no gain on an attempted screen pass.
