Mike Vukovcan Vikings Sports Now wanted to let you know about a young athlete in Hopewell that’s competing in big event this weekend.
12-year-old Myles Fisher will be competing in the 13 and under PGA Jr. League Regional Championship, which will take place at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse, New York. This PGA Jr. League Regional Championship will take place on September 11-13th.
In order to reach this spot, Fisher had to advance through plenty of qualifiers, which was a tremendous achievement in itself.
Myles and his team, U13 Rt 76/79 started by competing in a 2-day tournament/sectional (August 10th and 11th) at Tam o O’Shanter Golf Club in Hermitage, Pennsylvania.
Fisher and Team U13 Rt 76/79 competed against 14 other teams on August 10th and ended up finishing in the Top 4, which allowed them to advance to the next day qualifier on August 11th.
August 10th was stroke play and then on August 11th things turned to match play, in which U13 Rt 76/79 lost to a very good team.
Things didn’t end there as the following week, Fisher and his team had the opportunity to redeem themselves, which they did and that earned them a spot in the PGA Jr. League Regional Championship this weekend.
Here’s the format and what’s on tap for this coming weekend.
Myles’ team will be competing with 6 other teams, that have golfers from Central New York, NE New York, West New York and from the Tri State Section in Western Pennsylvania.
Following a practice round on Friday, the golfers will compete in a two-man scramble, followed by stroke play.
The goal for Fisher and Team U13 Rt 76/79 is to be in the Top 4 after Saturday, which would allow them to advance to Sunday. The winning team from the Final 4 would then advance to the finals which takes place in Texas in the month of November.
Fisher tells Vikings Sports Now that he’s excited and hopes that his team gives a good showing and is competitive against a lot of talented golfers. He would love the opportunity to be playing on Sunday and the chance to advance to the Finals in Texas.
“Either way, I’m just excited for this opportunity and am happy that I’ve gotten to meet and make new friends along the way,” said Fisher.
Team U13 Rt 76/79 consists of players with ages from 11 to 13. Myles is the only member of the team from Beaver County with the majority of the golfers coming from Mercer County. Despite being from different areas, Team U13 Rt 76-79 have gotten to be good friends has they have group chats and talk daily.
Myles Fisher started playing golf when he was 5 years old and since then, has competed in various tournaments in the Southwestern PA League and the PGA Jr. League.
This is a huge accomplishment so congratulations to Myles and his teammates.
