Hopewell HS Boys Soccer Bounces Back with Shutout over South Side

0 7 2 minutes read

Following a tough loss to Ambridge, the Hopewell HS Boys soccer team bounced back with a much-needed win against South Side, finding ways to create opportunities throughout the game while getting a solid performance from their defense and goalkeeper Tallon Coleman.

Hopewell’s defense continues to be a strength for the team this season, currently sitting second in the conference for fewest goals allowed. The back line, along with Coleman in goal, has consistently made it difficult for opponents to find the back of the net.

Hopewell jumped out several early offensive opportunities, with midfielders Will Arzberger, Aaden Gonzalez, Tyler Armour and Kaleb Gonzalez working to create chances alongside strikers Quincy Sannan and Nykyeron Leonora.

Hopewell would finally break through when Dylan Ankrom won the ball defensively and got it forward to Aaden Gonzalez, who found Elijah Rodriguez with the pass. Rodriguez then turned on his speed to finish the play and give Hopewell its first goal of the game. The goal was extra special for Rodriguez, as it marked his first varsity goal of his career and earning player of the match.

Hopewell’s starting defense of Parker Hoth, RJ Bushnell, Dominic Buschanan and Sam Wrzesniewski worked to limit South Side’s opportunities throughout the first half. When South Side was able to break through, Coleman was there to shut the door, collecting several saves to help keep Hopewell in control.

Hopewell then added its second goal following a throw-in from Kaleb Gonzalez deep in the box. Tyler Armour was able to get his head on the ball and keep it alive in the middle, where Leonora got his feet on it and put it into the back of the net to extend Hopewell’s lead to 2-0.

South Side turned up the pressure in the second half, creating several shots and challenging Coleman, but Hopewell’s defense continued to hold.

James Pistorius came up with several defensive plays in the back, breaking up South Side attacks while also carrying the ball upfield to help create offensive opportunities. Justin Dennis held strong on his side, battling South Side players, winning balls and helping Hopewell maintain possession. Caine Sullivan also stepped up in the midfield challenging South Sie and disrupting passes before they could develop into offensive opportunities.

RJ Arthur and Gabriel Gold also saw time for the Vikings, contributing to Hopewell’s effort as the team worked to main its advantage throughout the second half.

Hopewell would close out the night with a 2-0 win over South Side, getting the Vikings back in the win column. Hopewell will step out of conference play this Saturday when the Vikings take on Central Valley.
