Mike Vukovcan Hopewell’s Mikayla Kurta is going to enter her senior season with a large weight off of her shoulders as the biggest decision of her young life has been made.
Over the weekend the Hopewell volleyball standout made the decision to accept the offer to continue to play volleyball at Point Park University.
Kurta had other offers to play at Bethany College and West Virginia Wesleyan but decided to stay closer to home and play for Point Park.

Kurta set a goal for herself six years ago to try and become a college volleyball player and thanks to a ton of hard work that dream has become a reality.
Vikings Sports Now would like to congratulate Mikayla along with her parents Mike and Tara Kurta, who have supported their daughter in every way possible.
“Making this decision honestly feels surreal because for so long, playing volleyball in college was something I worked toward but never fully knew would become real,” Kurta tells VSN. “Now that it’s official, I feel excited, grateful, and proud of myself. There’s also a little nervousness because I know college volleyball is a completely different level, but I think that feeling just shows that I care and that I’m stepping into something meaningful.”
“More than anything, I feel thankful for everyone who supported me along the way because this decision isn’t only about one moment- it’s a reflection of years of practices, games, sacrifices and growth. It feels exciting knowing I’ll get to continue doing something I love while also starting a new chapter of life.”
Kurta is only 16 years old, and this obviously becomes the biggest decision of her life. So, I asked her about what factors went into deciding on Point Park.
“The biggest thing for me was finding a place that felt right as a whole- not just for volleyball. I wanted a school where I could grow as an athlete but also as a person because volleyball won’t last forever.”
“I chose Point Park because it felt like a place where I could genuinely see myself for the next four years,” said Kurta. “From the volleyball side, I felt supported and believed in, and that mattered a lot to me. But beyond that, I liked that Point Park offers opportunities academically and personally too. I felt like it’s a place where I wouldn’t only be known as an athlete- I’d also be able to grow into who I want to become. At the end of the day, Point Park felt like the best balance between chasing my goals in volleyball and building my future outside of it.”
Congratulations to Kurta along with HC Terry Borkovic and the Hopewell girls’ volleyball program who have produced yet another college player.
