The Hopewell Vikings put together a strong performance on both sides of the field, scoring three first half goals and maintaining their lead throughout the second half to earn a 3-0 shutout victory over Ellwood City.
The Vikings quickly found their offensive rhythm when Aaden Gonzalez worked his way through multiple Ellwood City defenders before connecting with Jaidyn Shoemaker, who got the ball back to Gonzalez, who finished the play for Hopewell’s first goal of the game.
Hopewell continued building momentum with another impressive scoring sequence. Shoemaker started the play with a header to Nykyeron Leonora, who connected with Quincy Sannan for the finish, extending the Vikings lead to 2-0.

Defensively, Hopewell’s back line played an aggressive role throughout the game, stepping forward to contribute to offensive runs and create scoring opportunities. Sam Wrzesniewski and Elijah Persi-Jones made several strong runs upfield, while Dominic Buchanan and Elijah Rodriguez helped shut down Ellwood City’s offensive attacks. Behind the defensive line, goalkeeper Tallon Coleman delivered a strong performance, recording several key saves throughout the game. His efforts included coming out of the box to clear a developing attack and making an impressive diving save off an Ellwood City corner kick to preserve the shutout.
Hopewell extended the lead to 3-0 when Dylan Ankrom connected with Sannan, who fired a shot toward the net. The Ellwood City goalkeeper managed to deflect the ball, but Justin Dennis was there to capitalize on the rebound, putting it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season and the Vikings third goal of the game.
The Vikings continued creating opportunities through strong passing and movement. Kaleb Gonzalez and Persi-Jones worked a give-and-go before Gonzalez connected with Wrzesniewski, who found James Pistorious for a crossing opportunity.
Persi-Jones was especially aggressive throughout the first half, repeatedly moving forward from his defensive position to contribute offensively. His efforts included a strong scoring attempt that struck the crossbar, narrowly missing another goal for Hopewell.
Wrzesniewski continued to make his presence felt on the offensive end. On one sequence, he connected with Sannan, who moved the ball to Aaden Gonzalez, Wrzesniewski continued his run forward, receiving the return pass for another shot attempt.

Hopewell carried the momentum into the second half, continuing to create scoring opportunities while maintaining its defensive effort.
Leonora sent a well-placed ball through to Tyler Armour, who narrowly missed the net on a scoring attempt in the beginning of the second half. The Vikings continued to build their attack through strong passing and teamwork. On one sequence, Will Arzberger started the play with a strong defensive stop at midfield before passing to Kaleb Gonzalez. Parker Hoth, Wrzesniewski, Pistorius, Shoemaker and Aaden Gonzalez also contributed to the sequence as the Vikings worked together to move the ball upfield.
Buchanan and Leonora also combined on an offensive sequence, looking to connect with Hoth farther upfield. Persi-Jones and Rodriguez continued showing strong hustle, while Arzberger made another defensive step to win possession and move the ball to Sannan, helping Hopewell transition back into the attack.

The Vikings continued looking for opportunities late in the game. RJ Arthur worked through a one-on-one situation against an Ellwood City defender before connecting with Kaleb Gonzalez, who returned the ball to Arthur to keep the attack going.
With just seconds remaining in the game, Hopewell nearly added another goal when Aaden Gonzalez spotted Caine Sullivan in front of the net, but the Ellwood City goalkeeper got his hands on the ball before the Vikings could capitalize on the opportunity.

The win improved Hopewell’s section record to 5-5-1, which has them in 4th place in Section 2, just a half game ahead of Mohawk. Keep in mind, the top four teams in the section qualify for the playoffs.
A huge game today for Hopewell as they travel to Mohawk, where a win would give the Vikings a 1.5 game lead for the final playoff spot.
