Mike Vukovcan HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP– We had some football this afternoon at Tony Dorsett Stadium as Hopewell hosted the Blackhawk Cougars in a JV game.
This game was scheduled because Hopewell’s game against Quaker Valley was previously canceled.
The development of the JV team is important because it’s comprised of the next wave of football talent here in Hopewell whether it’s the young players or some sophomores and juniors that are receiving valuable game reps.
As the same goes, a player is only one snap, injury or graduation away from having their numbers called so they need to be ready.
The game today was dominated by Hopewell from the opening snap to the final whistle as the Vikings shutout Blackhawk, 26-0. Vikings Sports Now as in attendance and the 3 standout performers were quarterback Justin Shegog, running back/linebacker Greg Gigliotti and defensive lineman Tyler Schroeder.
Here’s a recap of today’s game:
1st Quarter:
(Hopewell’s 1st drive of game)
-3rd and 1, Gigliotti runs for 11 yards
-1st and 10, Shegog 6-yard pass to Roman Amadio
-Shegog scrambles for 13 yards
Gigliotti runs for 7 yards, plus a 15-yard Blackhawk facemask penalty
Hopewell TD: Gigliotti runs for 13 yards    Hopewell 6-0
Blackhawk’s 1st Drive:
-3rd and 9, Schroeder sacks the quarterback for a 7-yard loss
Blackhawk’s 2nd Drive:
-Schroeder with his 2nd sack of the game, this time for a 6-yard loss
3rd and 15, Hopewell blitzes up the middle, Blackhawk quarterback has to hurry, throws it up and nearly intercepted by Amadio
4th and 20 from inside Hopewell territory, nice pass break up by Dom Boris.
Hopewell’s 3rd Drive:
-Hopewell TD: on a designed run, quarterback Shegog runs 70 yards up the right sidelines, Hopewell now leads 12-0

1st Drive of 3rd Quarter:
Blackhawk driving, 3rd and 3, but Schroeder with a tackle for a 3-yard loss
4th and 6, pressure off the edge by Evan McCabe forces a hurried throw by Blackhawk QB
Hopewell’s 4th Drive:
-3rd and 2, Shegog breaks 2 or 3 tackles, runs across the field and picks up 18 yards
-Gigliotti carries about the pile of Blackhawk defenders for 8 yards
-Shegog 28-yard pass across the middle to Amadio
-Hopewell TD: 4th down, Shegog with TD pass in front of endzone to Josh Gill, Hopewell 18-0
-2 Point Conversion: Gigliotti sprints to pylon for 2 points, Hopewell 20-0
-Following a fumble recovery by Hopewell, the Vikings offense strikes again
-3rd and 8, Shegog to Boris for a 1st down
-This TD pass was called back because of holding, Shero’s to Boris
-Didn’t matter as on the next play, a nice scramble by Shegog, who eventually finds Josh Reynolds for a 25-yard TD, Hopewell 26-0.
