Mike Vukovcan Congrats to Hopewell Minors/PGT Trucking team (9–10-year-olds) for an impressive, 20-8, win last night on the road against West Mayfield.
With the win, Hopewell/PGT Trucking has started the season 2-0.
West Mayfield scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 7-4 but Hopewell/PGT Trucking answered when they came to bat in the 4th inning by also putting up 6 runs to take a 10-7 lead. Hopewell then went on to score 6 more runs in the 5th inning to put the game out of reach.
As you can tell by the score, Hopewell had the bats going as they collected 16 hits, including 6 extra base hits. This team was also patient at the plate as they drew 17 walks.
As we look into the box score, Lucas Strano and Logan Giering led the way with 4 hits apiece, both of those players also clubbed 2 doubles. Great job guys! Three Viking players had 2 hits each including Aaron Ackerman, Jacen Zio and Elias Swenson. Also on the hit parade were Clayton Magnone and Quinn Zappas (double), with one hit apiece.
In terms of who drove in the runs, Giering collected a game-high 5 RBI, followed by Zappas and Zito each with 3, Ackerman and Strano had 2 RBIs, while Magnone, Swenson and Bennett Beron had one RBI apiece.
Keep in mind, the minors are when kids start pitching to each other, so this is a new experience for some of them. The challenge for the pitchers is getting the ball into the zone and for the hitters, especially the 9-year-olds, will be standing in there and finding a good pitch in the zone to swing at.
In Minors, players are only permitted to pitch 2 innings.
Strano started for Hopewell and went 2 innings, allowing 6 hits, only 1 earned run, striking out and not walking a single batter.
Magnone pitched the 4th and 5th innings, allowing only 2 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks and striking out 4 batters.
Giering came on to close and didn’t allow a hit, run or walk, while striking out 2.
Berron pitches the 3rd inning allowing 1 hit, 2 earned runs, walking 4 and striking out 1.
Hopewell Minors/PGT Trucking will return to action tomorrow when they take on another team from West Mayfield.
