Out of nearly 400,000 fastpitch softball athletes competing across America, Hopewell High School’s Addison Pavlisko (RHP/2028) has earned the opportunity to represent not only The United States, but also Pittsburgh PA, her family, Pittsburgh Riot Fastpitch and Hopewell High School at The Cup NL 2027.
This event is known to be the second most prestigious international softball event in the world behind the Olympic event. In January 2027, Addison will travel to The Netherlands to compete in the 31st Annual the Cup NL, an international event that has become one of the most respected showcases in all of fast pitch softball.
“I’m honestly so happy and grateful for this opportunity to play at this level of softball. Words can’t describe the gratitude I have for being given this opportunity,” Pavlisko tells Vikings Sports Now.“
The Cup NL is hosted in Schiedam, Netherlands, near Rotterdam, a region regarded as one of Europe’s strongest centers for fastpitch softball. The Cup NL is in its 31st year; first held in Lyon, France and moved 27 years ago to the Netherlands. Athletes compete against teams from multiple countries, including the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy.
Selection for The Cup NL is highly competitive and is based on much more than athletic talent alone. The tournament organizers look for athletes who demonstrate excellence both on and off the softball field.
Qualifications include:
- Strong softball skills and performance. Athletes must demonstrate a high level of ability in hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching, catching, and overall game awareness. The selection committee looks for players who can compete successfully against elite international competition.
- Consistent dedication and work ethic. Athletes are expected to show a commitment to training, skill development, and continuous improvement throughout their softball careers.
- Positive attitude and sportsmanship. Because players serve as ambassadors for their teams and communities, selectors place significant value on respect for teammates, coaches, officials, and opponents.
- Coachability and teamwork. Athletes must be able to work effectively within a team environment, accept instruction, and contribute positively to team culture.
- Leadership qualities. Selected athletes must demonstrate leadership through their actions, communication, and ability to support and motivate teammates.
- Character and maturity. International competition requires athletes to represent their country responsibly both on and off the field. Character, professionalism, and personal responsibility are important factors in the selection process.
- Academic and personal responsibility. Since many participants are student-athletes, maintaining responsibilities in school and demonstrating strong personal accountability is also considered.
