vikingssportsn HOPWELL TWP– Hopewell and Beaver traded opportunities, defensive stands and stretches of sustained pressure Thursday night, but after 80 minutes neither side could find the breakthrough as the Vikings and Bobcats finished in a 0-0 draw.
The scoreline may have been quiet, but the game was anything but.
Hopewell created several promising opportunities in the opening half. The Vikings earned a corner in the opening minutes and soon threatened when Aaden Gonzalez sent a ball into the middle for NyKyeron Leonora, who connected on a header that was handled by the Beaver goalkeeper.
Hopewell continued to find ways forward. Leonora connected with Quincy Sannan for a shot that the goalkeeper deflected, with Jaidyn Shoemaker immediately applying pressure in search of the rebound. Shoemaker later would find Sannan for another quick attempt that went just wide.
The Vikings’ pressure wasn’t limited to shots. Shoemaker’s work up front repeatedly forced Beaver into hurried decisions and balls out of play, while RJ Bushnell provided energy in transition. On one first-half sequence, Bushnell carried the ball on a long run through the midfield before nearly connecting with Tyler Armour.
With 24:48 remaining in the first half, Sannan found A.Gonzalez for another Hopewell shot on goal, but Beaver’s goalkeeper made the save.
Hopewell also produced one of its best stretches of possession through a passing sequence involving Bushnell, Sannan, A.Gonzalez and Leonora as the Vikings worked the ball around the Beaver defense and looked for Shoemaker in the attack.
But as the half progressed, Beaver began creating opportunities of its own — and Hopewell’s defense answered.
Dominic Buchanan repeatedly disrupted dangerous attacks, including a late Beaver shot attempt that he deflected out for a corner. Dylan Ankrom made a pair of aggressive defensive stops to prevent potential shots, while Sam Wrzesniewski, Parker Hoth and Elijah Persi-Jones each contributed important defensive plays.
Behind them, Tallon Coleman provided a steady final line of defense.
Coleman made multiple first-half saves and wasn’t afraid to leave his box when necessary, reading developing attacks and coming forward to clear the ball downfield before Beaver could capitalize.
The defensive effort sent Hopewell into halftime tied 0-0.
The Vikings returned from the break looking to attack. Bushnell, Sannan and Justin Dennis combined on an early sequence to move the ball forward, while Leonora found Sannan for another run toward goal. Shoemaker continued causing problems with his pressure and also made a strong run looking to connect with Will Arzberger.
Buchanan later connected with Dennis for a second-half scoring chance, but Dennis’ shot went over the net. A. Gonzalez also helped spark the Hopewell attack from the back line, carrying the ball upfield on a long run before finding Leonora and creating another scoring opportunity.
Beaver, however, began increasing its pressure as the second half wore on.
With 11:28 remaining, Hopewell faced perhaps its biggest defensive test of the night. Beaver generated multiple opportunities around the box, but a group effort from the Vikings’ defense kept the ball away from goal before Coleman finished the sequence with another big save.
Hopewell’s defense continued delivering under pressure. Persi-Jones broke up a dangerous Beaver attack, and Bushnell later stepped in to cut off a ball headed toward a Beaver striker.
The final minutes became increasingly tense.
With 3:25 remaining, Beaver earned another corner. Persi-Jones got his head to the ensuing ball before Coleman came down with it to end the threat.
Then came one final scramble.
With just 14 seconds remaining, Beaver created multiple attempts inside the Hopewell box. The Vikings refused to concede, battling through the traffic and keeping the ball out of the net one final time.
The whistle sounded moments later, securing the 0-0 draw.
For Hopewell, the shutout was a complete defensive effort. Coleman provided the saves in goal, but the Vikings repeatedly received important interventions from Buchanan, Ankrom, Persi-Jones, Wrzesniewski, Bushnell and A. Gonzalez.
At the other end, Hopewell had opportunities of its own and used pressure, movement and combinations from players including A. Gonzalez, Shoemaker, Bushnell, Sannan, Kaleb Gonzalez and Leonora to challenge Beaver throughout the night.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net, bringing a hard-fought battle to a 0-0 finish.
Overall Hopewell showcase a complete team effort — 80 minutes of relentless pressure, key defensive stops and a determined performance that preserved the shutout until the final whistle.
Hopewell improved their section record to 2-2-1, while Beaver sits at 5-1-1.
Next up is a big section match on Tuesday as the Vikings will host Ambridge, which has a current record of 5-1.
