Hopewell Sophomore Avery Bokor is on a Mission!

It would be a vast understatement to say that Hopewell just turned sophomore Avery Bokor is on a mission.

Since the last snap of the 2024 Hopewell High School Football season, Bokor set a personal off-season goal of getting bigger, stronger and faster prior to the start of next football season.

Welcome done Avery, mission accomplished.

Every time I run into Bokor, I always say that I don’t even recognize him, because he looks like a completely different kid compared to one year ago.

This transformation didn’t happen on accident or just because Avery wanted it to. He made it happen but watching what he ate and working out rigorously,

“Since the end of last season, I’ve grown 4 inches and put on 35 pounds,” Bokor tells VSN. “I’m now 5’11″/6-foot and 165-pounds. I’m excited by my growth because I didn’t think I’d get this big, this quick. I’m not done as my goal is to get up to 175-pounds by the start of the football season.”

In terms of the weight, Bokor tells me what he’s had a simple formula/eating pattern that he’s followed and since it’s worked, he’s sticking to it.

“I eat a lot of rice; I cut up potatoes and eat steak and chicken probably two times a day. It’s really helped.”

As far as his workout schedule, he doesn’t take any days off. At the end of last football season, Bokor joined the Hopewell HS Track and Field Team, which just concluded their season. Now he’s working out with both the football and basketball teams with their summer conditioning.

“Aside from working out with my teammates, I go to the gym seven days a week,” said Bokor. “If I miss a day, the next day I’ll go twice in a day to make up for it. My routine at the gym is first day chest and triceps, second day is back and biceps, third day is shoulders, I do legs twice a week and I try and get plyometrics because my focus now is gaining speed and explosiveness.”

At the start, I mentioned that Bokor was on a mission and the purpose of this all is to make himself a better football player with the ultimate goal of one day playing college football.

Bokor is still working hard towards earning that first college football scholarship. Being only a sophomore, he obviously still has plenty of time. However, Bokor wants it bad and doing everything in his power to make it happen.

On Sunday, Bokor along with a handful of his Hopewell HS football teammates took part in the Robert Morris football mega camp at Joe Walton Stadium. From all accounts, Bokor performed extremely well as he explained to us what the day consisted of.

“After arriving, we signed in, we got shirts, took our height and weights, went down to the field and stretched, then we got our 40 times, our shuttle runs and our broad jumps,” said Bokor. “And after that, we went with our specific position groups and ran drills and routes.”

“It was fun to be out there and to get a chance to compete against different athletes from different grades. There’s a benefit of participating in these because when I’m there, I watch some of the better players there and I believe that I can learn from them, which gets me better. As far as my performance, I think I showed coaches that I can get open and that I can catch the ball.”

Having the opportunity to perform in front of 25+ schools and wanting so bad to impress in order to possibly earn a scholarship, had to have Bokor nervous, right?

“To me, this is the same thing as playing in a football game,” said Bokor. “The first snap of the game, I always feel nervous and after that, I feel fine. It’s the same way I felt yesterday. I felt relaxed.”

Bokor might have another camp or two lined up for the remainder of the summer but for the most part his concentration is on the 2025 Hopewell football season. Last season, Bokor was mainly used as a safety and on special teams, but his goal is to become a contributor on the offensive side of the ball.

“I didn’t play any offense last year so I’m working in order to play on offense this year and to get a lot of catches and a lot of yards. On defense, I’m going to play safety but also up in the box at outside linebacker. I’m going to be a lot better player this year.”

Although he’s trying not to think about it, Bokor is hoping that all this hard work and increased production on the field results in his ultimate goal of earning that football scholarship.

“My goal is to have earned by first scholarship by the spring of next season,” said Bokor. “Every day that I don’t have that offer, it just motivates me to work harder in order to get one.”

Knowing his work ethic, combined with his talent, I don’t think it’s a matter of it but when that first offer comes in.
