vikingssportsn AMBRIDGE-The Hopewell HS boys soccer team opened conference play against Ambridge in a defensive battle that remained scoreless until literally the final second.
Just before time expired, Ambridge found the back of the net for the game’s only goal, handing the Vikings a heartbreaking 1-0 loss.
The match featured strong defensive play and several promising offensive pushes from Hopewell, but the Vikings were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Hopewell appeared to gain momentum during the final 15 minutes, but Ambridge’s last-second strike proved that sometimes one opportunity is all it takes in soccer.
Hopewell’s defense delivered a strong performance throughout the match, led by RJ Bushnell, Dominic Buchanan, Sam Wrzesniewski, Elijah Persi-Jones and Dylan Ankrom. Behind the defensive line, goalkeeper Tallon Coleman recorded 13 saves and repeatedly kept the Vikings in the game.
The Vikings moved the ball well throughout the first half, using a series of effective give-and-go passes to build their attack. Nykyeron Leonora, Aaden Gonzalez, Will Arzberger and Quincy Sannan helped create opportunities by connecting with James Pistorius, Kaleb Gonzalez, Jaidyn Shoemaker and Tyler Armour.
Elijah Persi-Jones also helped Hopewell maintain possession by pressing higher up the field and cutting off Ambridge’s long passes during the first half.
Hopewell’s biggest opportunity of the first half came when Aaden Gonzalez drove into the box and drew a penalty. Leonora stepped up for the penalty shot, but Ambridge’s diving goalkeeper made the save.
As Hopewell’s last defender, Buchanan came through with several key stops to prevent Ambridge from breaking through toward the goal. His play helped send the evenly matched teams into halftime scoreless.
Hopewell opened the second half with more offensive pressure. Justin Dennis challenged the Ambridge goalkeeper with a shot on goal, but the keeper secured it. Leonora later found Aaden Gonzalez for another attempt that went wide, and Bushnell stepped forward from the defensive line to add a shot of his own.
The Vikings continued to show good passing later in the half. Wrzesniewski made a quick pass to Kaleb Gonzalez, who found Quincy Sannan before Ambridge’s defense stopped the attack. In another late opportunity, Tyler Armour connected with Aaden Gonzalez, who found Leonora for a shot attempt.
Sam Wrzesniewski provided a strong defensive presence throughout the second half, shutting down Ambridge’s long passes and intercepting several balls that helped Hopewell transition into its attack.
Despite Hopewell’s late offensive surge, the game appeared destined to end in a scoreless draw. With only one second remaining, however, Ambridge managed one final shot that found the back of the net and stunned the Vikings.
Although the loss was heartbreaking, Hopewell showed plenty of positives on both sides of the ball. The Vikings created several scoring opportunities, defended well and received an outstanding performance from Coleman in goal. The next step will be turning those opportunities into goals and finishing the match all the way through the final whistle.
Hopewell will look to learn from the loss and regroup when they host South Side in their first home match on Thursday.
