vikingssportsn HOPEWELL TWP- Hopewell Boys Soccer continued to find its offensive rhythm Thursday night, putting together another strong performance against Mohawk in a game that featured plenty of scoring opportunities, solid defensive work and a second-half downpour.
Hopewell wasted little time getting on the board. With 38:25 remaining in the first half, Aaden Gonzalez helped start the attack, finding Jaidyn Shoemaker, who connected with Quincy Sannan for the opening goal and an early 1-0 Hopewell lead.
The Vikings continued to control possession and create opportunities in Mohawk’s end. At 29:22, Sam Wrzesniewski stepped up from the back line to join the attack, sending a hard ball forward that deflected off Sannan and fell to Shoemaker, who was there to tap it in for Hopewell’s second goal of the night.
Hopewell kept the pressure on as Gonzalez later connected with Shoemaker for another goal, extending the Vikings’ lead. The offense continued to threaten throughout the half, with Will Arzberger and Dominic Buchanan both getting opportunities on attempted headers. Gonzalez nearly helped create another goal when he made a run toward the net and sent a cross toward Sannan, but the ball was just out of his reach.
Mohawk looked to create some pressure of its own, but Hopewell’s back line continued to shut down dangerous opportunities. Elijah Persi-Jones was there to clean up anything that made its way through to the back, while RJ Bushnell, for the second straight game, played a key role in controlling the ball out of the defensive end and carried it forward several times to help start the attack. Buchanan broke up multiple Mohawk plays with well-timed sliding tackles, while Wrzesniewski frequently pushed forward from the back line, adding several offensive runs throughout the night
With 6:44 remaining in the half, Gonzalez fired a shot that hit the post. Bushnell was there to collect the rebound and put it away, sending Hopewell into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
The weather quickly became part of the story after halftime, as heavy rain moved in and turned into a straight downpour.
Despite the conditions, Hopewell continued to attack. Wrzesniewski put a shot on frame that forced a diving save from the Mohawk goalkeeper before Sannan broke through for Hopewell’s first goal of the second half as the rain continued to pour. From there, the Vikings settled into the half and embraced the weather, even mixing in a few sliding celebrations on the rain-soaked field.
Mohawk tried to build momentum with a series of short passes, but Persi-Jones stepped in to break up the run before a shot could develop. Hopewell’s defense continued to hold strong as the half wound down, with Justin Dennis making another key stop at 9:42. Dennis disrupted the Mohawk attack and pushed the ball back toward midfield, shutting down the scoring threat before it could develop.
Hopewell added another goal with 7:29 remaining when Nykyeron Leonora scored off an assist from Aaden Gonzalez. When the final whistle sounded, Hopewell walked away with another convincing team performance — one that featured contributions throughout the lineup, continued offensive production and a defense that consistently prevented Mohawk from developing sustained threats.
Goalkeeper Tallon Coleman recorded his second straight shutout, coming up with several saves throughout the night to keep Mohawk off the board. Mohawk’s biggest threat came on a free kick from around the 15-yard mark, but Coleman was there to knock the attempt down and preserve the clean sheet.
Hopewell will get to enjoy their two wins from this week before returning to action next Tuesday when they travel to Riverside.
The Vikings next home match will be next Thursday (September 24th) against Beaver, which is Youth Night for the Hopewell soccer organization.
