MONTOUR HIGH SCHOOL– The Hopewell High School baseball team’s strong play continued last night as they went on to road to take on a 1st place team in 5A.
HC Morgan Singletary’s team had a road non-section game Friday night at Montour, which is a very talented team. Montour entered the game in first place in Class 5A/Section 4 with an overall record of 6-2 and 4-0 in section.
Thanks to strong pitching and some big-time defensive plays, Hopewell defeated Montour, 4-3. This was no doubt a big win for Singletary as he is a graduate and played high school baseball at Montour High School.
This becomes the second impressive non-section win for Hopewell, following their impressive win last week over 1st place Avonworth.
As it’s been for a majority of the season, strong pitching was the key for Hopewell. Senior Ben McDonald got the start and was outstanding as he went 4 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs (0 earned runs) and struck out 8 batters. Senior Drew Donovan pitched the final 3 innings and allowed just 1 hit, 1 earned run and struck out 2 batters. This was a big-time effort by Donovan considering he hasn’t gotten a ton of time on the mound this season.
How good and reliable has Hopewell’s pitching been this season?
In their 9 games this season, Hopewell has allowed 3 or less runs in 7 of those 9 games. Getting that type of efficiency will keep you in and allow you to win a lot of games.
With the win last night, Hopewell improves their overall record to 6-3, which surpasses their win total from last season with at least 9 games left in the season.
KEY MOMENTS IN LAST NIGHT’S GAME:
*Bottom of 1st: Montour had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs, and McDonald went on to strike out the next 2 batters. Then with 2 outs, the runner at 3rd broke home when catcher Charlie Smetana was throwing the ball back to McDonald, but Ben quickly caught the ball and fired to Smetana at home to get the runner. 0-0.
*Top of 2nd: Logan Triscila is hit to lead off the inning and after stealing 2nd base, Triscila scores on a single to right field by McDonald. Hopewell led 1-0.
*Bottom of 2nd: McDonald strikes out the side, all swinging. Hopewell 1-0.
*Bottom of 3rd: Montour with runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs, McDonald fields a comebacker to the mound to end the inning.
*Top of 4th: For the second time this game, Triscila leads off an inning and reaches base, this time as he draws a full-count walk. Next up, senior James Gill stays hot as he hits a double to center field, which advances Triscilla to 3rd. McDonald then brings Triscila home with a sacrifice fly to center field. Hopewell wasn’t done as they took advantage of wild Montour pitching as Collin Davis, James Armstrong and Donovan drew back-to-back-to-back-to-back walks, which scored Gill and Davis. Hopewell led 4-0.
*Bottom of 4th: Montour scored 2 runs and were threatening to score more but solid Hopewell defense ended the Spartans hopes. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Montour hit a double which scored two runs, however the inning ended when the runner from first also tried to score. However, the Hopewell relay throw form Armstrong to Davis to Smetana cut down the runner. As they say, DOA (Dead on Arrival).
*Bottom of 5th: Donovan entered the game and Montour put 2 runners on with 1 out but the threat was ended as Davis fielded a ball at short and turned an unassisted 6-3 double play to end the inning. Hopewell still leads 4-2.
*Bottom of 6th: An easy 6th inning for Drew as he struck out 2 Montour batters.
*Bottom of 7th: Montour’s leadoff hitter reached on an error and the next batter, doubled to right field. On the play, Montour was once again aggressive and tried to send the runner home from second base and it wasn’t the right decision as Hopewell executed another perfect relay play (Kingston Krotec to Triscila to Smetana at home). Out at the plate.
Montour did score a run on a sacrifice fly, but the game ended on a ground out to Davis at shortstop.
FINAL SCORE: HOPEWELL 4 MONTOUR 3
Hopewell will only have one game next week as they’ll take on another 5A team, Shaler, in a non-section game. They’ll return to section play the following week when they take on Hampton in a 2-game series.
